How does data backup work in Windows XP ?

Can you answer Silly Shelu’s question about Data Recovery?:

1] Does the sytem creat an exact replica of the data selected for backup ?

2] Where is the backup file stored and will it be not lost if hard disk fails ?

3] How is the data restored using backup file ? If I have a tree of folderes, sub-folders, files etc. which have been backed up, will they be restored in the same order during the data restoration process ?

4] What are the pros and cons of backing up data on an external disk like CD or DVD ?

5] How does the backup file act during restoration process ?

PS: Please do not suggest a web article unless it has a comprehensive information.

    Data Recovery Feedback: 1. Yes.

    2. On a CD, DVD, External HD or an online back up site.

    3. Put the CD or DVD in the drive. Follow the instructions. For External HD or Online backup follow the instructions. Yes, they will be restored the same.

    4. The storage media layered in the CD/DVD will start to degrade over time. Generally 3-5 yrs if they are stored properly. If not stored properly they will degrade much faster. External HD’s have the same 5-8 yr. expected life span as your built in HD.

    5. I have restored backed up information a couple of time and had no problems with it. Everything worked just like its supposed too.

I first did my backups to CD’s, then went to external HD. Now I use an online service for a small monthly fee. I like this best. The backup is set to backup new data only at certain intervals. I don’t have to worry.

I have AT&T Yahoo DSL service and use AT&T online backup service.

Windows Live One Care and several others offer this service.

Backing up your data is not an either/or option. If you have valuable data it will be lost the first time you have a serious “crash” or have to Reformat for some reason. Also, having the data backed up allows you to do Reformats at regular intervals to keep it operating at peak performance. I reformat mine every 6 months.
